Mitsuri scraped past the graduation line by the skin of her teeth with bottom-of-the-class grades, and the last thing in her life to go smoothly so far was landing a position as a research intern at an institute called Somnium. The institute is mainly devoted to storing, creating, and outputting dreams, providing treatment and extraordinary experiences to dreamless modern people.
She hasn’t accomplished much in the way of experiments, but when it comes to washing test tubes and tasting coffee, Mitsuri is a real pro. In just one month, she has already scooped up a whole slew of key posts at the institute, including “Test Tube Cleaning Specialist,” “Coffee Procurement Officer,” and “Chief of Laboratory Sanitation.”
The headache, though, is that any lab equipment that passes through Mitsuri’s hands inexplicably breaks. The number of instruments sent for repair is positively correlated with the length of Mitsuri’s internship, and negatively correlated with her intern pay.
Until one day—
“Write-off no. 2,473.” Mitsuri hit the confirm button on the console, and the blood-red account balance on the holographic screen stung her retinas. Just then, she glimpsed a suspicious figure flitting past the doorway, and a moment later, a flyer drifted in through the crack in the door.
“Didn’t I already put a ‘No Flyers’ sign on the door? So why are they still—!”
Mitsuri picked it up and was just about to crumple it into a ball when she caught phrases like “Join Us,” “Solve Your Most Pressing Problems,” and “A Company With a Conscience.” And signed at the bottom, in letters that leapt right off the page: VirtuaReal.
Thinking of her full-time contract drifting ever further out of reach and her intern pay that couldn’t cover her expenses, Mitsuri tucked the flyer into her pocket.
“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try…” Mitsuri mumbled under her breath.
More to come. Stay tuned.
