“A hundred li west by water lies Mount Yiwang. No grass or trees grow there, but there is much gold and jade. There is a beast there that looks like a wildcat, with one eye and three tails, called the huan. Its cry sounds as though it could drown out a hundred others. It can ward off evil, and eating it cures jaundice. There is also a bird there that looks like a crow, with three heads and six tails, which is fond of laughing, called the qitu. Eating it keeps one from having nightmares, and it too can ward off evil.”
This is how the Classic of Mountains and Seas records the huan. Meme is a huan—except she doesn’t live on Mount Yiwang, but in a little mountain village on the southeast coast. It isn’t even cut off from the world; it’s just hard for takeout and packages to get there.
So Meme blended into human society long ago. By mythical-beast standards she’s still just a cub, but in human society she’s at the age of a fresh college graduate who can’t find a job, and her little heart is under pressure it should never have had to bear.
Luckily, having seen and learned plenty over all these years, Meme quickly found the job that suits her—VTuber—and now she’s officially debuting as a mythical beast who stepped out of a book!
“Wait, what? How can our personas possibly overlap on this, of all things?!”
More to come. Stay tuned.
