Izayoi stared at the “Mission Complete” notice on the screen and, without a flicker of expression, closed the report page.
As far back as she can remember, she was always wandering the forest alone. Simply because her fur was far too conspicuous, she became an outcast who never fit in among the raccoons, with only the fireflies of the woods for company. Late at night, when all was still, she would curl up and wrap herself tightly in her big, fluffy tail. As for how she became a secret agent, Izayoi honestly doesn’t remember very well. All she knows is that only by filling her life with endless busyness can she drown out those superfluous thoughts that have nowhere to go.
Her most recent mission was at a maid café. She was forced into an unfamiliar foreign outfit that was hard to move in, and spent three whole months gritting her teeth through smile-and-etiquette training. On the job, she had to covertly carry out the “human observation mission” assigned by the Organization while also dealing with customers who squealed “So cute!” the moment they spotted her ears and tail. As luck would have it, her cool, aloof air and her soft, oh-so-pettable tail ended up making her the café’s star maid, and she very nearly got appointed as the next manager.
At the end of every mission, she still curls her tail around herself out of habit. When will days like these ever end? Muttering under her breath, she opens a newly arrived email: “Next mission: Infiltrate VirtuaReal and conduct an ecological survey.” The attachment thoughtfully includes profiles of the members to keep a close eye on: an ordinary high school girl who loves jelly, a girl with soft, adorable bunny ears, and a halo-wearing, fell-from-the-sky… human?
Izayoi accepts the mission, as expressionless as ever, though a thought flickers through her mind for no particular reason: This mission… maybe it won’t be so hard to get through?
More to come. Stay tuned.
