Melodies have flavors too—you and I may not be able to taste them, but for Inochi, no meal is complete without them.
Inochi is an alien from Planet CF21, and growing up, he never knew what “delicious” meant. On his home planet, people have no sense of taste or smell. They only gulp down sludgy nutrient fluid and chew on waxy food blocks, regarding every act of eating as a painful exercise they must endure just to keep their vital signs going.
As an adult, Inochi was on an interstellar trip when he was accidentally sucked into a black hole and ended up on Earth. Thrown into these unfamiliar surroundings, Inochi panicked and wanted to find a way to escape as fast as he could—but a sweet, fragrant aroma stopped him in his tracks.
Huh? Wait, what? What on earth is this feeling? Even the word “sweet” was some bizarre term that had popped into his head out of nowhere… Unable to resist, Inochi searched high and low, until he finally found the answer in the hands of a street performer. Countless “delicious” melodies were gushing out of an instrument called a guitar. Inochi’s mouth fell slightly open in spite of himself—it was the first time in his life he had ever felt the joy of eating. Notes big and small tingled his taste buds, and tones high and low wafted into his nose. From then on, Inochi never once thought of fleeing back home; these otherworldly delicacies made him so happy he couldn’t tear himself away.
Sour is farewell pickled in harmonica; sweet is celebration baked from children’s voices; bitter is desolation stewed on the erhu; spicy is frenzy stir-fried on hand drums… Inochi is head over heels for all the joys and sorrows of this planet, which is why he can’t stop thinking about the ad on the flyer he’s holding right now.
